EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) has signed forward Matthew Durrans (der-ANNZ) to a contract for the 2021 season, the club announced today.

Durrans was most-recently under contract with historic German club 1860 Munich (TSV München von 1860) making two appearances last season competing in the third tier of professional football in that country. The West Vancouver, BC native signed with 1860 at age 14.

"Matt is a Canadian striker who left for Germany at a young age and became a professional player in one of the best football developmental countries in the world," said FC Edmonton Head Coach Alan Koch. "He is well educated in the 1860 Munich system and we are excited to welcome him to FC Edmonton. We look forward to integrating him into the team as quickly as possible."

Before signing his first professional contract with 1860 just last September, the 22-year old played for some of the top youth clubs in his home province of British Columbia, including the Vancouver Whitecaps and Mountain United, and also honed his skills at the North Shore-based European Soccer School. He and his family relocated to Germany to continue his youth training and development there.

"I am very excited to be joining FC Edmonton after playing for eight years in Germany," said Durrans. "This is a great opportunity to play in my home country, to be part of the CPL, and to progress my professional career. I look forward to meeting my new teammates and contributing to a really successful season for the team."

While with 1860, he earned playing time on loan between 2017 and 2019 with Regionalliga Bayern side VfR Garching scoring one goal in 11 appearances. He also made 35 appearances between 2018 and 2021 with 1860 Munich II in the Oberliga Bayern Sud scoring eight goals and assisting on five others in that span.
