FC Edmonton Signs Academy Graduate and Canadian U-20 International Shamit Shome
February 12, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton added another midfielder to the fold, Feb. 10, signing local talent Shamit Shome. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Shome, 18, is no stranger to the Edmonton soccer community, having graduated from the FC Edmonton Academy before attending and competing for the University of Alberta Golden Bears in 2015.
"We knew from an early age with Shamit when he first started the program that he would be a player that we kept our eye on," FC Edmonton academy technical director Jeff explained. "Shamit had a real opportunity to become a professional player and he's done that. I'm thrilled."
Shome's play as a U-16 garnered attention from Canada Soccer, developing into a relationship that quickly gained momentum. The Edmonton native made his national team debut in France last October and most recently featured on Canada's U-20 squad in November. He was the only Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) player selected to the November camp that saw Canada competing in a pair of matches against powerhouse side Mexico.
"You look at a player like Shamit and other Academy graduates who have come before him and I think it is a great example of the positive things that can happen when clubs in the city work in co-operation with FC Edmonton Academy," Paulus added. "I've talked about the Canada Soccer Pathway in the past and this is a great example of how it can work"
Shome joined the Golden Bears soccer program last season and made an immediate impact, receiving the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) 2015 men's Rookie of the Year award. Shome finished eighth in goals scored overall during the Canada West regular season, finding the back of the net six times for the Bears. He was also named a second team all-star after starting at midfield for all 12 of the Golden Bear's conference games.
"Shamit's signing is another terrific compliment to FC Edmonton Academy, Jeff Paulus, as well as our Academy staff," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated. "Shamit has not only been outstanding in the Academy, he has also played very, very well with the U of A last season and been a standout performer. I think it's a terrific signing for us and the local element is always great to have."
Shome and FC Edmonton open their 2016 North American Soccer League campaign, April 2 against Rayo OKC. The team returns home for their Home Opener, April 10 against Minnesota United FC. Kick-off at Clarke Field is set for 2:00 p.m. MT. For tickets and more information, please click HERE, call 780.700.2600 or visit www.fcedmonton.com.
