FC Edmonton News Release
MONTREAL, QC. - The NASL regular season comes to an end Saturday for FC Edmonton as it takes on the Montreal Impact in a contest that has massive playoff implications (Kick Off @ 7:30 p.m. EST/www.fcedmonton.com).
FC Edmonton will need some help if they are going to host a home playoff game this year. A win against Montreal combined with a Fort Lauderdale loss or draw against Atlanta would vault FC Edmonton back into fourth. The Strikers would still have one game to play however, against FC Tampa Bay on Sept. 24. If they lose that game, FC Edmonton will play a quarter-final match at Foote Field on Oct. 2.
If Edmonton loses to Montreal and the Strikers beat Atlanta, FC Edmonton will play its quarter-final on the road on Oct. 1.
FC Edmonton struggled early on in the season against the Impact, losing its home opener 5-0 followed by a 2-0 loss in Montreal a month later. The last time the two teams faced each other though, FC Edmonton walked away with a 1-0 victory at Foote Field.
The Impact are currently in seventh place and are on the outside looking in at a playoff spot. They're only three points back of the sixth place NSC Minnesota Stars but if the Stars lose to FC Tampa Bay on Saturday and the Impact manage a win over Edmonton, Montreal would hold the sixth and final playoff spot going in to the last week of play in the regular season.
