HEMPSTEAD, NY (Sunday, May 10, 2015) - FC Edmonton played their second away match of the 2015 North American Soccer League (NASL) season in New York against the New York Cosmos on Sunday, May 10. Coming into this match, FC Edmonton were undefeated in five matches across all competitions, but fell 4-2 against the Cosmos in James M. Shuart Stadium.
Two minutes into the match, FC Edmonton once again found themselves conceding an early goal. Off a New York short corner, the ball ended up at Raúl's feet in the18-yard box. He sent it to the opposite post where defender Carlos Mendes was waiting for the easy tap in for the 1-0 lead.
The Eddies came back in the 17th minute off a penalty kick taken by Tomi Ameobi. FC Edmonton caught the Cosmos off guard with a quick free kick and after some wrestling in the box, FC Edmonton was awarded a penalty. Ameobi's shot was well taken and went by Jimmy Maurer and into the top right corner of net to bring the Eddies level at 1-1.
New York once again took the lead in the 24th minute. After two shots connecting with the crossbar, Raúl was able to pick his place in an Eddies empty net to make it 2-1 to the home side.
The Cosmos were able to add to their lead in the 36th minute after another New York short corner was fumbled by the Eddies defence. VanOekel came off his line to clear the ball, but was unable to get to there before Mendes, who headed it into the net for a 3-1 home team lead and his second goal of the match.
Hoping for a fresh start in the second half, FC Edmonton was once again pinned back conceding another goal. New York forward Lucky Mkosana collected a through ball and took his time to pick his spot in the back of the Eddies net as the FC Edmonton defence waited for the offside call. 4-1 to New York.
A handful of substitutions in the second half saw youngster Hanson Boakai make his NASL debut for the 2015 season as well as the return of Tomas Granitto.
The Eddies were able to pull one back 75 minutes in off the foot of Ritchie Jones. Ameobi raced down the far side of the pitch, and with the remainder of New York's backline tracking Boakai, it left Jones open at the top of the box to side-foot it into the back of the net. New York still with the 4-2 lead.
After 90 minutes in New York, FC Edmonton were able to find the answer and fell 4-2 to the Cosmos in their second loss of the year.
"It was a disappointing result," said FC Edmonton's head coach Colin Miller. "We had hoped to get some points in New York, but our defending cost us dearly today. We can't keep giving teams a goal to start and expect to come back. I have to give the guys some credit for their character, though. After everything they were still trying to get forward."
FC Edmonton now switch gears to the Amway Canadian Championship semi-final series against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. They head to BC Place for the first leg, which kicks off at 8:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday, May 13. FC Edmonton's official viewing party will be held at Wild Wing in Sherwood Park or fans can watch on Sportsnet World (check your local listings).
