FC Edmonton Announces Signing of Thomas Gardner
March 23, 2021 - Canadian Premier League (CPL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton has signed Thomas Gardner to a CPL U SPORTS contract for the 2021 season, the club announced today. Gardner was the first overall draft pick in the 2021 CPL U SPORTS draft that took place on January 29.
FC Edmonton had the first and 16th draft picks in the two-round draft. All draftees are guaranteed invitations to the clubs' preseason training, with the hopes of securing a 2021 U SPORTS Development Contract for the upcoming season. These contracts allow a student-athlete with one to five years of U SPORTS eligibility remaining to sign with a CPL Club, while preserving their eligibility before returning to U SPORTS competition.
FC Edmonton made the decision to proactively sign Gardner to a contract before pre-season training officially begins based on the club's pre-draft roster planning, and on his collegiate playing career.
