FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton announced today that it has come to an agreement with midfielders Pablo Cruz and Thiago de Freitas, pending international clearance. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Pablo Cruz
Cruz arrives in Edmonton following a stint with San Antonio Scorpions after spending three years as a member of Atlanta Silverbacks, where he played from 2012-14. Last fall season, the 23-year-old, attacking midfielder accumulated three goals and three assists through 16 matches and 1,101 minutes played in the Fall Season.
"We're really, really pleased to get Pablo because we tried to get him in the off-season," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller explained. "Due to some irregularities in the dealings the deal fell through and we were disappointed at both ends. We're delighted to get one of the most skillful attacking players in the league. He will add a real different dimension to our attacking play. I'm sure he will be a big impact player for us and we look forward to him stepping into the team as quickly as possible."
Thiago de Freitas
de Freitas arrives from AOT Alimos (A.O Trachones F.C.) where he played a half season in Greece's second division. Prior to Greece, de Freitas spent a year in Isreal with Hapoel Nir Ramat HaSharon, collecting two goals and two assists in 18 matches. The well-travelled, 27-year-old central midfielder has played in a multiple countries that also include Hungary and Portugal.
"We've watched extensive video and highlight footage of Thiago," Miller added. "He comes from an excellent background and an excellent football pedigree. There are players that I've spoken to from within our league that have said what a good player we are getting and we expect him to make an immediate impact. I think he'll be a terrific signing for us."
The two players will participate in their first Eddies training session Friday, June 19 at Riel Park from 10-12:00 p.m.
"This time last year we made two significant signings in Christian [Raudales] and Chad [Burt]," Miller concluded. "Both made immediate impressions on the club and we expect these two players to do the same."
FC Edmonton resumes North American Soccer League (NASL) competition on July 5, 2015 at Shell Place in Fort MacMurray, AB against San Antonio Scorpions. Kick-off in the match is set for 2:00 p.m. MT.
