EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton has acquired forward Roberto Avila on loan from Austin Bold FC (ABFC) of the United Soccer League (USL), the club announced today.

Avila (5'7", 155 pounds), known as "Beto", joined ABFC in 2019 under an academy contract and made three appearances during the club's inaugural season. The Austin native signed his first professional contract prior to the 2020 season, and in 10 matches, the 20-year-old scored two goals and had three key assists.

"We are looking forward to welcoming Beto to our team," said FC Edmonton Head Coach, Alan Koch. "We are grateful for the trust that Austin is putting in us to help develop one of their promising young players. Beto is a technically-proficient attacking player, who has an excellent work rate, and will come in and compete for playing time right away."

A product of the Lonestar SC Academy, Avila played for the youth club's U19 squad and scored 12 goals in 18 appearances during his tenure there. He has also played for other Central Texas youth clubs, including the Houston Dynamo and Austin Texas SC.

"The CPL is growing competitively as a league," said Marcelo Serrano, Head Coach of ABFC. "Having FC Edmonton interested in receiving one of our players on loan affirms our ability to develop young local talent".
