New Orleans VooDoo News Release
NEW ORLEANS (October 14, 2013) - New Orleans VooDoo defensive lineman Marlon Favorite is a man of many professions; however, coaching is one job Favorite finds the most rewarding.
After recording the most tackles in the League by a nose guard at 25 during the 2013 season, Favorite spends his offseason coaching, as many of his fellow teammates spend theirs. Favorite is the Assistant Defensive Line Coach for De La Salle High School in his home town of New Orleans. This is Favorite's third year as a coach and second year coaching for De La Salle.
"Last year I was the defensive coordinator, so things are a little different this year," said Favorite. "I kind of come in and assist the rest of the coaching staff. I mainly help with coaching technique, motivating the kids and pushing these young athletes to execute the game plan week by week."
Head Coach Ryan Manale explained how Favorite is a key part to the success of the Cavalier football program.
"He brings character to the field, the way he is as a person elevates the whole team," said Manale. "When he's out at practice giving up his time, his knowledge of the game and his character alone lifts up all of the athletes around him."
Favorite has had work cut out for him this season, as he only has two returning defensive linemen.
"AJ Rhea and Gary Williams are my guys from last year," said Favorite. "I have some younger guys on the line this year. Gary is the only senior and AJ is a sophomore who has improved tremendously from one year with me."
For someone who played on their level and the levels they strive to achieve, Coach Manale said these young athletes look up to Favorite as a role model.
"The kids see him as a young coach that they can relate to," said Manale. "He is a guy who has done it all and is still getting it done. He is a hard worker and a good and humble coach.
This past week marked the first week of district play for the Cavaliers. Favorite emphasized the importance of the weeks to come to his team.
"We had district this past week," said Favorite.
"I basically let the team know that they should take this week personal. Even though this is a fun game, this week and the following weeks are not to be taken lightly. They must play to the best of their ability."
The Cavaliers (4-2) played their first district game of the season this past Friday night. De La Salle gained their first win of district play with a 14-6 victory over Eleanor McMain High School.
The VooDoo will keep you updated on the progress of De La Salle High Football as the season progresses.
