SURPRISE, Ariz. (Aug. 27, 2005) - The Surprise Fightin' Falcons aren't going to the Golden Baseball League playoffs, but at least they know they won't have a losing season. The Falcons assured that Saturday night with a doubleheader sweep of the San Diego Surf Dawgs in front of 2,152 fans at Surprise Stadium.
Behind six scoreless innings from Pete Hartmann, the Falcons won the first game 4-2. In the second game, Surprise used an extra-inning RBI single from Desi Wilson to win 2-1 in dramatic fashion.
The victories give Surprise a 45-44 record heading into the final game of the season Sunday against the Surf Dawgs. San Diego, meanwhile, was not affected by the losses as the Surf Dawgs wrapped up the California Division title in Surprise Friday night.
Hartmann continued his dominant pitching in the second half of the season by picking up his 10th win of the year in the first game. The Falcons' pitching coach allowed only two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four.
In the second game, Wilson won it when he pinch-hit with the bases loaded and one out. The veteran, who all but assured he will finish the season with a batting average over .400 singled to deep left field to drive in the winning run.
