Falcons Offence Sputters in Series Finale Loss to Sweets

WALLA WALLA, WA. - The Kelowna Falcons offence sputtered and mustered just three hits as they dropped the series finale to the Walla Walla Sweets with a 2-0 loss on Thursday night at Borleske Stadium.

Michael Peterson pitched seven innings of one-hit ball while a 2nd inning solo home run from Ben Fariss and a sacrifice fly was all the offence that was needed as Walla Walla picked up the series win with a 2-0 victory over the Falcons.

Walla Walla was first to jump on the scoreboard in the game, which came in the second inning and courtesy of one of the big bats from a night ago.

Ben Fariss took a fastball and sent it deep to left field off of starter Trevor Brigden for his second hole run in as many at-bats and the solo blast gave Walla Walla a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.

Kelowna got their first hit of the game coming to lead off the 3rd inning in the way of a Jake Fischer single to right field but would be stranded at second base as the half inning came to a close.

Both the starters in Brigden and Michael Peterson settled into a groove as Brigden poured on the strikeouts and got himself out of some jams, stranding a runner at third base in three of the first four innings.

The Sweets got a lead off single from Fariss in the 4th inning before a double from Cesar Lopez put a pair of runners on with none out. Brigden was resilient, getting two groundouts and a strikeout to work his way out of the jam.

Walla Walla broke through and added to their lead after reliever Ian Turner took over in the 6th inning. Lopez drilled a triple to the wall in right center field and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Johnston to increase the Sweets lead to 2-0.

Peterson was terrific in the game, retiring 13 straight Falcons after the Fischer hit before Lucas Soper drew a two-out walk in the 7th inning and was left stranded at first base.

The Falcons pitching did a solid job of keeping the score the same before the Falcons came up in the 9th needing their offence to get some momentum. Trent Tinglestad laced a two-out double to left center field but would be all they could muster as they fell by a pair of runs.

Trevor Brigden started the game, allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out ten batters through his five innings of work but was saddled with the loss while Michael Patterson earned the win with his terrific effort of going seven innings allowing just one hit, no runs and striking out eight batters.

The Falcons (24-23/10-11 ) conclude their road schedule in the regular season as they make their way north to face off against the Bellingham Bells (33-17/15-9 ) for a four-game series beginning on Friday with a 6:35 PM start time at Joe Martin Field.
