Fade Routes and Team Physicality

Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA BAY - During day six of training camp, the Tampa Bay Storm attacked an important aspect of arena football by working on fade route passing drills.

The fade route is a type of play in which the receiver runs up the field, turning at an angle, and then running toward the sideline. It is the type of play that usually comes with a one-on-one matchup between the receiver and the defensive back.

When discussing the fade route, first-year Storm quarterback Shane Boyd said, "It's a play where you have to trust your receiver to get over the defensive back and get the ball. This is the type of play that is important because it is a good way to get up and down the field to score."

These past few days the defense made it rough for the passing game, but today that all changed. First-year Storm wide receivers Chris C. Davis and Jason Chery scored on several plays and muscled through a defensive backfield that has been solid throughout camp. The receivers also flexed their muscle which was exhibited by first-year Storm receiver Greg Ellingson who bowled over his backfield teammate as he went into the end zone.

Friday Schedule Change: The scrimmage with the Orlando Predators set for tomorrow has been moved to Saturday, March 9 at 10:00 AM at the Florida Citrus Bowl. The Storm will have a normal training camp schedule tomorrow out at Skyway Park starting at 9:00 AM.

Coaches' Perspective: On being physical, Storm head coach Dave Ewart said, "We would like to be more physical as a team. It's something we preach in every aspect of our game."

Quote of the Day: On the Storm wide receivers being more physical, Storm offensive coordinator Lawrence Samuels said, "We always teach our offensive guys to be physical out there. We want them to be just as physical as the defense and be the most aggressive guy out there."

Player Spotlight: Coming into the offseason the Storm made it a priority to improve the defensive backfield. The team brought in new guys that were faster, more physical, and had the ability to mesh with the returning veterans. One of the free agents the team acquired was defensive back Rashad Barksdale. Barksdale spent the past two seasons with the Kansas City Command and record 195 tackles, to go along with 16 pass breakups and three interceptions. His knack for getting to the ball has shown this training camp as he has accounted for two interceptions, including one today.
