EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats (1-3) lost 54-47 in Bloomington Saturday night versus the Bloomington Xtreme (2-2). The BlueCats lead the game 20-13 at the half and held the lead until the final minutes of the 3rd quarter. After a Bloomington score, Evansville muffed the kickoff and Bloomington recovered inside the BlueCats ten. This turnover proved costly and was the turning point in the game as Bloomington quickly scored a touchdown to pull the Extreme to within one point, 30-29.
The teams traded scores through the fourth quarter with each team taking turns in the lead. Bloomington scored their final touchdown with 1:15 on the clock, giving the BlueCats time for another possession. Evansville quickly drove down the field and looked to the end zone in the final minute when Dion Brown interception Kewan Dewberry's pass that was intended for Levron Williams in the back of the end zone. Brown made the pick in mid-air and flipped over the back wall. Brown maintained possession despite the hard crash over the wall and out of bounds and Bloomington was awarded the football on a touchback and was able to run out the clock. The loss moves Evansville is (1-3) on the season as Bloomington improves to (2-2).
The BlueCats were led by running back Dale Jennings, who also saw time at wide receiver, cornerback, and kick returner in the game. Jennings finished with 19 yards rushing and 3 rushing touchdowns, 2 receptions for 5 yards, and 4.5 tackles with a pass break up. Jennings is currently tied for the league lead with 9 touchdowns scored this season.
Quarterback Kewan Dewberry went 19 for 31 with 199 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was intercepted only once on Evansville's final offensive play of the game. His favorite target was wide receiver Sean Bennett who caught 8 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Levron Williams and Levandar Segars had 4 catches each, Williams finished with 42 yards and a touchdown and Segars had 34 receiving yards. Segars also returned 5 kickoffs for 87 yards.
Dale Jennings was the leading tackler for the BlueCats as he played both ways during most of the game. Matt Wycoff and Tarron Acuff had 4 tackles each; Acuff added 3 defended passes to his effort. Nose tackles Bryant Berry made 3.5 tackles in his BlueCats debut. The BlueCats defense also blocked two kicks, one was blocked by Levron Williams, and one was blocked by Brad Kunz.
As a team, Evansville racked up 291 yards of net offense against the Extreme, their best total so far this season.
Evansville kick Ton-Ton Luzayadio had a record-breaking game kicking field goals and extra points for the BlueCats. Luzayadio converted 4 of his 5 field goal attempts. 4 field goals in a single game is a new BlueCats record. Ton-Ton was also a perfect 5 for 5 on his extra points. He leads all kickers in the league and is in 5th overall with 49 points scored, averaging over 12 per game. He is the most accurate and most productive kicker, averaging 3 field goals per game, and kicking 57% in field goals, both league leading. He's also connecting with over 81% of his extra points.
Bloomington quarterback Dusty Burk had an incredible game, passing for 212 yards and 6 touchdowns and led his team running for 39 yards and 2 more touchdowns. Next weekend the Bloomington Xtreme will travel to Rockford, Illinois to face the Rock River Raptors (2-2).
The Evansville BlueCats return home this Saturday night, April 22nd, to take on the Lexington Horsemen (3-0). Kickoff for Saturday's game is set for 7:05pm at Roberts Stadium.
