Errors And Runners Left On Base Hurt Redfish In 4-1 Loss

May 20, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The first home stand for the Charlotte County Redfish is one that they would rather forget but history won't let them. The South Georgia Peanuts swept the Redfish at home and the Peanuts' bats seemed to be able to crack the Redfish pitching.

After a wild and late Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park, the Redfish looked to come out and put up one win in their first series of their inaugural season. Another pitchers duel was in the making as Damien Dantibo took the hill for the Peanuts and Redfish Manager sent Daniel Chafferdet, one of four left-handed pitchers on the Redfish staff. The Peanuts got their first run of the ballgame in the second inning. Chafferdet walked Tug Willingham, the leadoff batter, and then got Joey Hooft to ground into a fielder's choice. Hooft stole second and reached third as Chafferdet threw the ball into centerfield for an error. Brandon Woolard, the Peanuts first baseman, singled home Hooft and the Peanuts lead 1-0.

With great starting pitching from Dantibo, Peanuts Manager, Wally Backman, got more than he could have hoped for in his first game in the dugout for the Peanuts. The only Redfish run of the night came in off the bat of Sanyle Martinez, the Redfish left fielder. Martinez roped an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth that brought home PJ Lehmann from second base, who walked earlier in the inning. The main flaw of the Redfish was that they left eleven runners on base and three of the Peanuts four runs as a result of three fielding error.

Chafferdet pitched six full innings in which he allowed three runs, all unearned, three hits, and three walks. Chafferdet struck out seven Peanuts in his losing effort. Dantibo claimed his first victory and Josh Cowles earned his first save of the year, closing the door on the Redfish in the ninth.

The Redfish square off in the first game of three game series against in-state rivals, the Bradenton Juice, tomorrow night, May 20th, with the first pitch being thrown out at 7:05 PM. This will be the first leg of the Sunshine Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing, and can be heard on 1070 AM WKII. It will be Civic Group Night with an Antique Car Expo by the Veteran Motor Car Club of America. It will also be Bingo Monday, presented by McDonalds.
