Erie Freeze News Release
As the March 31st opening of the team's first training camp approaches, the Erie Freeze of the Atlantic Indoor Football League and Freeze Head Coach/GM Mike Esposito continue to aggressively fill the Freeze roster with some major talent from across the country.
The Freeze are proud to announce the signings of three Division I defensive backs: Darryl Murphy from the University of Idaho, LaTroy Oliver from Syracuse, and Shawn Robinson from the University of Pittsburgh.
Darryl Murphy comes to the Freeze from the University of Idaho via the College of the Canyons JC program. The 5'11", 185 pound cornerback recorded 48 tackles in his senior year for the Vandals. Murphy worked extensively with the Vandals' first defensive unit immediately improving its depth significantly. He led team in pass breakups in his senior year.
LaTroy Oliver, a 5'7", 194-pound cornerback, earned four letters for the Orange of Syracuse. The savvy defensive back played in 43 career games with the Orange recording 74 career tackles, six interceptions, 1.5 sacks, and 3 fumble recoveries. Oliver recorded a career-best 10 solo tackles against the University of Central Florida in 2002.
Shawn Robinson, a 6'1", 190-pound defensive back from Warren, OH, played four years for the Pittsburgh Panthers. Robinson is a big cornerback whose height and long arms allow him to steer opposing receivers. A multi-faceted player, Robinson led the Panthers in punt return yardage in 2002 and recorded six interceptions in 2000 which made opposing teams respect his ability by not throwing his way in coverage.
Coach Esposito added, "I feel our defensive backs are all 'legit' guys. They look extremely impressive on film and all have been on many CFL and NFL team's "radar." Bringing these guys into camp in Erie will make the competition better and also make us that much better as a defensive unit as a whole."
The Erie Freeze will kickoff the 2005 season April 16 in Johnstown, PA. The Freeze opens its home schedule April 23 at 7 p.m. in Tuillio Arena against Richmond.
