San Diego Sunfire News Release

HOUSTON – The San Diego SunFire suffered jet lag on the field and off, as they succumbed to a 62–22 defeat at the hands of the three-time WPFL champion Energy on Saturday night at Rice Stadium in Houston.

San Diego, which dropped to 1-4 in WPFL play, made the trip to Texas on Saturday morning. Problems with a cancelled flight led to the SunFire missing its connection in Dallas, putting the team behind and on the field just over an hour before game time. Nevertheless, San Diego was ready to play at game time, but the Energy opened the scoring early in the first quarter and continued to put points on the board throughout the contest. San Diego did manage to take an 8-7 when Aisha Ruffo found Carmen Cruz for a 28-yard touchdown pass following the Energy score. Houston then ran off 42 unanswered points to put the game away. San Diego didn't score again until the fourth period, as Ritzberg scampered 45yards for a sparking touchdown run. Ruffo later connected with Athena Reyes on a 32-yard pass play for a score; Ritzberg made good on her second two-point conversion of the game. The Energy, who evened its record to 2-2, tallied their final touchdown as the clock expired to end the game.

It's been a tough first half of the season for the SunFire having lost four games to the league's toughest teams, three of whom remain undefeated. San Diego can improve their record during the second half of the season, as the SunFire will play four games against teams with worse records.

NEXT GAME - The SunFire hosts its third home game of the season taking on the winless Temecula Scorpions at La Jolla High Stadium on Saturday night, 7:05 p.m. PT.

SUNFIRE STAR – Running back Railene Ritzberg had 25 carries for 188 yards and 1 TD.

ALL STAR - Carmen Cruz had 8 receptions for 108 yards and 1 TD to lead all receivers.

ROOKIE WATCH - Linebacker Latashia Mckinney had 12 tackles to lead all linebackers.
