Empire Defense Dominates Again: by the Numbers

The Albany Empire (2-0) defeated the Washington Valor (0-2) on Saturday night at the Times Union Center by a score of 36-27 in front of a crowd of 9,208 in a rematch of the 2018 playoff series. The game was a back and forth battle all night, but the Empire defense dominated once again, moving Albany into a tie for first place early in the season.

Empire quarterback, Tommy Grady, won another game MVP honor, tallying 19 completions on 31 attempts for 246 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Similar to Week One, Grady spread the ball around to all of his weapons, finding 5 different receivers on the night. Offensive Player of the Game, Malachi Jones, led the Empire with 6 catches for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tying Jones in receptions, Collin Taylor compiled 6 catches for 55 yards. Receiver, Demetres Stephens, reeled in 4 catches for 50 yards and 1 touchdown, and added another 61 yards on kickoff returns. Quentin Sims once again scored in his second game with the Empire, posting a line of 2 catches for 19 yards and 1 touchdown. Fullback, Mykel Benson, had 1 catch for 3 yards and 1 touchdown, and added an additional 7 yards on 1 rushing attempt.
Taking home Defensive Player of the Game honors, Terence Moore, added 5.5 total tackles and 1 interception on the night. Leading the team in total tackles for the second consecutive week was rookie defensive back, Tevin Homer, who racked up 8.5 on the night. Defensive lineman, Calvin Fance, and linebacker, Jeramie Richardson, both added 0.5 tackle for loss in the game. Through two games on the season, the Empire defense has allowed a mere 46 total points, 22 points less than the Philadelphia Soul who sits in second in the points allowed category.
The next game for the Empire is a road matchup against the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, May 11 at 7:00 pm in the Wells Fargo Center.
