Electrifying Start Not Enough for Lights FC at Monterey Bay
September 16, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Las Vegas Lights FC News Release
Lights FC started a three match road trip in California by taking on Monterey Bay FC in Seaside, California.
Las Vegas started off hot with two goals in less than a 90 second span. First off, Marcelo Lage opened the score in the 17th with his fourth goal of the season, all of them from headers following a corner kick play.
The Lights' extended their lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute with the team turning defense into offense. Andres Jimenez Aranzazu stole the ball near midfield, found Luke Stauffer on the right side and with a big personal play he got past two defenders to serve a cross into the box to Las Vegas native Azriel Gonzalez, who found the back of the net for the third time in 2023.
Monterey Bay got one back via a header inside the six-yard box from Sean Okoli in the 29th minute minute, leaving the scoreboard in favor of Las Vegas 2-1 at halftime.
The home side kept chipping in by pushing numbers forward the moment the whistle blew to start the second half, and they were rewarded leveling the game 2-2 in the 62nd minute with a header from former Lights FC defender Alex Lara.
The "Union" completed their comeback in the 74th minute with a streaking Rafael Baca scoring the third unanswered goal from Monterey Bay to win 3-2. This match was key for the California squad as they reached 40 points and currently hold the final playoffs spot in USL Championship's Western Conference.
