PORTLAND, ME â Eastern League President Joseph McEacharn has announced his selections for the Eastern League Chevrolet Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending June 1st, 2003:
Binghamton Mets catcher Mike Jacobs has been named the Eastern League's Chevrolet Player of the Week for the week ending June 1st. Jacobs, a native of San Diego, California, hit .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles, one home run, seven RBI, five runs scored, one walk and had a slugging percentage of 1.000 in six games last week. The 22-year old went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, one RBI and two runs scored in the B-Mets 15-7 win over the Ravens on May 27th. During the month of May, the 6'2", 200 lb. slugger batted .372 (32-for-86) with four home runs, raising his batting average from .234 to .324, which currently ranks 10th in the Eastern League. Jacobs was selected by the New York Mets in the 38th round of the June 1999 draft.

Fernando Cabrera, a right-handed pitcher for the Akron Aeros, is the Eastern League's Chevrolet Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 1st. The Toa Baja, Puerto Rico native went 2-0 with seven strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA in starts against the Altoona Curve and Bowie Baysox last week. The 21-year old gave up one run on four hits and struck out four batters to pick up the win in his first start of the week. In his second start of the week the 6'4", 170 lb. hurler surrendered two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out three batters in five innings of work to earn the win, improving his record to 5-2 and lowering his ERA to 2.53 (7th in the E.L.) on the season. Cabrera, who is 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA over his last three starts, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round of the June 1999 draft.
