Eighth Inning Welke Blast Leads Dutchmen to Victory

The Albany Dutchmen (15-17) won in dramatic fashion over the Newark Pilots (18-15) at Bob Bellizzi Field on Tuesday night. A three-run blast by Albany in the eighth inning by catcher Ryan Welke (Northwest Florida) ultimately led to a victory as the Dutchmen continue to chase for second place in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball East Division.
Both teams scored early in the PGCBL interleague contest. Newark cleanup hitter Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) started things off for the Pilots blooping a two-run RBI double to right field in the first inning to give Newark a 2-0 lead. An inning later the Dutchmen cut the lead in half as Paul Bello (Georgetown) hit an RBI single to put Albany on the board to bring the score to 2-1.
After Villa drove in a third run for the Pilots, the Dutchmen notched things up. Will Remillard (Temple) drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single followed by a Van Amburg sacrifice to even the score at 3-3.
For the next three innings both teams exchanged zeros before Ryan Welke (Northwest Florida) came up clutch for the Dutchmen. In the bottom of the eighth the Albany catcher blasted a three-run home run to right field, bringing the fans to their seats and giving Albany a decisive 6-3 lead. Zach Robinson (Miami, FL) closed things out for the Dutchmen recording the save.
Dutchmen starter Cameron Brewer (North Central Texas) was removed from the game after injuring his right shoulder in the second, but Dutchmen relief kept steady shutting Newark out after the third inning.
Tim Haley (John Wood CC) recorded the win while Andrew Tidwell (Saginaw Valley) was tagged with the loss for Newark. Welke led all Dutchmen hitters going 2-4 with three RBIs. Joey Boney (Cypress) also went 2-3 for Albany. Villa went 2-4 for Newark with three RBIs.
The Dutchmen will host the Elmira Pioneers tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Newark will head home to play the Amsterdam Mohawks tomorrow at 7 p.m. For all Dutchmen information visit www.dutchmenbaseball.com.
