FC Edmonton News Release

EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (6W-4D-4L) won their second match in a row in North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season action with a 2-0 away victory over Indy Eleven (3W-3D-8L) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 19.

A convincing Eddies side dominated on both fronts with goals by striker Daryl Fordyce and midfielder Sainey Nyassi, while Eddies goalkeeper Matt VanOekel earned a league-leading sixth clean sheet between the woodwork.

Indy Eleven jumped out of the gate early with their first chance on net occuring within the first minute of play. Midfielder Dane Richards cut in from the left wing and curled a shot in from the edge of the area that slightly missed the target.

The Eddies had the best chance of the half on 32 minutes. Midfielder Pablo Cruz worked a cross to Corea over Indy's defense and goalkeeper Kristian Nicht, but the 'keeper quickly recovered and got back in time to block Corea's volley attempt. Cruz was at it again late in the half when he cut in from the left wing and fired off a dangerous, long-range shot that forced Nicht to make another critical save.

Both sides would head into the half deadlocked at 0-0.

The Eddies carried their offensive momentum into the second half and gained the lead on 55 minutes when midfielder Lance Laing crossed the ball into Indy's area. Striker Fordyce was there to shoot the ball through Nicht's legs for the 1-0 lead.

VanOekel first real test in net came on 58 minutes. Indy midfielder Dragan Stojkov hit a low forceful shot from in-close, but the Eddies 'keeper was able to get down on time to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Indy Eleven nearly levelled the match on 77 minutes when defender Cory Miller connected a powerful header towards the near post off a corner kick, but his attempt would sail just wide of the net.

The Eddies increased their lead on 85 minutes. Eddies midfielder Ritchie Jones won a tackle on the edge of the box and found Gambian international Sainey Nyassi, whose powerful left-footed shot found the bottom corner for the 2-0 final score.

"It was a fantastic win and it was totally deserved in a very difficult venue," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "We've shown here that we can compete. It was just a genuinely terrific team performance."

FC Edmonton are back home next Sunday, Sept. 27 to host Spring Season champions New York Cosmos. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. MT, and the match will be streamed locally on City TV.
