EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (7-4-6) travelled to James M. Shuart Stadium, Oct. 11 to take on New York Cosmos (8-6-4) for the second time in two weeks, conceding a 3-0 victory in the first of a three-game road trip.
Cosmo Sebastien Guenzatti opened scoring in the match 37 minutes in before teammate Raúl doubled the lead on 45 minutes. Ruben Bover rounded out scoring in the for the home side on 85 minutes. It was a quiet night between the woodwork for New York goalkeeper Jimmy Mauer, who earned the clean sheet for his side.
Quality chances on goal were almost non-existent until late in the opening half, with free kicks for both the Eddies and Cosmos proving to be no real threat. It was a chippy opening 45 minutes of play, with 16 combined fouls between the two sides.
New York pulled ahead on 37 minutes after Guenzatti slotted home his opportunity from inside the box. The Uruguayan midfielder received a through ball from teammate Gaston Cellerino and put a low shot to the left of Eddies 'keeper Matt VanOekel for the 1-0 lead.
The Cosmos then doubled their lead just before the half off the foot of Raúl, who found the ball at his feet after a rebound from a New York set piece. The Spaniard half-volleyed a blast near side for the 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The Eddies were unable to push back into the attacking third as the second half got underway, resulting in head coach Colin Miller inserting midfielder Pablo Cruz, Daryl Fordyce and Frank Jonke in hopes of generating a comeback.
Unfortunately for the Eddies, New York was able to put the final nail in the coffin with a goal on 85 minutes. A miscue on the Eddies back line ended with midfielder Boyer lobbing a ball over the head of VanOekel for the 3-0 lead and eventual victory.
The Cosmos held the edge in play with 59-percent possession overall and a total of 12 shots on target, while the Eddies were able to generate just a single shot against Mauer through 90 minutes of play.
"The first 35 minutes I thought we played well and defended well," Miller said. "But at end of the day we were beaten by a better squad. I can make all the excuses you want but sometimes you have to take your hat off to a better quality of team at this moment in time. It's now history, we regroup and we have to try and get three points against Carolina."
The Eddies face a quick turnaround, heading to Wakemed Soccer Park, Oct. 14 to take on Carolina RailHawks at 5:30 p.m. MT in a critical midweek match. The game will be streamed live on ONE World Sports. For more information, please visit www.fcedmonton.com.
