EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (7-4-4) climbed up to fourth place in the North American Soccer League's (NASL) Combined Standings after defeating the New York Cosmos (6-5-4) by a score of 2-1 at Clarke Field, Sunday, Sept. 27.

Lance Laing and Daryl Fordyce both scored before the half-time break to set the home side up for victory while Marcos Senna pulled a goal back for the Cosmos from the penalty spot in the second half.

Both teams exchanged opportunities early in the match, with the Cosmos earning an early free kick from just outside the box. Spanish international Senna fired a curling effort that went wide of Edmonton goalkeeper Matt VanOekel's net.

Edmonton responded with short free kick on 15 minutes that resulted in a terrific Pablo Cruz cross. Fordyce met the cross with a goal-bound header, but Cosmos 'keeper Kyle Zobeck made a diving save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Edmonton would open the scoring on 41 minutes when Laing latched onto a loose ball in the Cosmos half. Dribbling towards goal, Laing beat his defender and before firing a shot low into the corner for the 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, the Eddies doubled their lead through Fordyce on 43 minutes. Breaking out on a counter attack, midfielder Dustin Corea sent Fordyce on a breakaway after the Northern Ireland striker did well to stay onside. Fordyce kept his composure and found the back of the net.

The Eddies would lead 2-0 lead at the half.

New York would pull one back just before the hour mark after Edddies captain Albert Watson was penalized for a handball inside the box. Senna calmly placed the ball past VanOekel to make it 2-1.

Cosmos possession increased through stretches of the second half as the visiting side attempted to level the match to no avail. Edmonton's Tomi Ameobi, Ritchie Jones and Sainey Nyassi entered the match late in the half, with Jones nearly putting the match away before his strike from inside the box deflected off a Cosmos defender and out of play.

"It was a fantastic team performance against a talented New York side," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "The crowd were excellent today and we have given ourselves a chance for a playoff spot."

FC Edmonton takes on Ottawa Fury at TD Place on Sunday, Oct 4 at 1:00 p.m. MT. The Eddies will an Official Viewing Party at The Pint Downtown. The game will be broadcast on NASL.com in Canada and ESPN3 in the United States. For more information please visit www.fcedmonton.com.
