
East Kentucky Miners turn back Kentucky Bisons

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Seven different players reached double figures in the scoring column Wednesday night as the host East Kentucky Miners defeated the Kentucky Bisons 132-106 at the East Kentucky Expo Center in another CBA-ABA matchup played as part of the historic Interleague Challenge. East Kentucky, which outscored Kentucky in each of the first three quarters, shot 63-percent from the field en route to the win.
Bench play helped to push the Miners over the top. Reserves Jason McLeish and Delvin Thomas led East Kentucky in scoring with 21 points apiece. Mike Crain, another reserve, followed with 20 points for the Miners. Crain, East Kentucky's leading long-range shooter, drained two of three attempts from behind three-point line.
Jermaine Blackburn scored 17 points, Joe Buck pushed in 16, Wayne Turner tallied 13 and Mike Dean contributed 15 as East Kentucky scored over 100 points for the fourth straight time in as many outings this season.
The Miners handed out 28 assists while committing 17 turnovers.
East Kentucky outscored the visiting team 35-27 in the opening quarter. The Miners carried a commanding 65-45 lead into halftime.
East Kentucky stretched its lead in the second half, outscoring the ABA squad 35-29 in the third quarter.
"Overall, we played well in the second and third quarters," said East Kentucky Coach Kevin Keathley. "We didn't take care of the basketball like we should have at times. Obviously, we're happy to be on the winning side. Offensively, shooting-wise, we're right where we want to be."
Kenny Jones led the Bisons with a game-high 31 points and 10 rebounds. Jones, who recorded the game's lone double-double, registered his game-high totals in 26 minutes. Teco Dickerson scored 17 points, Boris Siakim pushed in 16 and Thad Key collected 15 for the visiting ABA team.
East Kentucky will host the West Virginia Wild Saturday and Sunday. The Wild feature Kentucky high school basketball legend J.R. VanHoose. A former Kentucky Mr. Basketball, VanHoose is a Paintsville native.
Tip-off for the Saturday, Dec. 20 Interleague Challenge game pitting the Miners against the Wild is set for 7:05 p.m.
