East Kentucky Miners News Release

PIKEVILLE - American soldiers who continue to fight for freedom are in the hearts and on the minds of many. Members of numerous Kentucky National Guard companies are among those currently stationed in Afghanistan. Tammy Day, whose son Johnny is serving in Afghanistan with other Kentucky National Guard troops from the 206th, recently contacted the East Kentucky Miners organization about sending team-related merchandise to the soldiers in the form of a care package. She wanted to help lift the morale of her son and other soldiers, letting them know those at home are thinking of them. Day contacted the Miners office and Director of Sales & Marketing Brian Levy was moved to honor the request. The soldier's mother picked up the package July 15 at the Miners office in Pikeville. The package will be sent to the troops at Fob Laghman, Afghanistan. "We are honored to show our support for the soldiers who give so much - especially after the recent Fourth of July holiday," said Levy. "It's a very special opportunity to be able to reach out and give hope to our troops overseas." The package was comprised of signed memorabilia, including hats, calendars and programs.

"We couldn't be happier to recognize and honor the men and women who are fighting everyday," said East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley. "Just as proud as we are of these Kentucky National Guard soldiers who are serving on all of our behalf, we hope that they will wear the Miners logo with pride." Soldiers in the 206th are Spc. Johnny Day, Spc. Walter Zimmerman, Spc. Josh Hall, SSC. Vince Matteni, Sgt. Josh Barker, SSG. Mike Taylor, Pvt. James Harmon, Spc. Travis Blake, 1LT. Riley, Spc. John Conley, Spc. Jerry Carpenter, Spc. Michael Portzer and Sgt. Clayton Segbart.
