Leighton Carruthers scored his first goal in the QMJHL while Roy and Burns each pitched in with a pair but the Sea Dogs (5-6-3-1) were outscored 8-6 by the Cape Breton Eagles (7-8-0-0) at Centre 200 on Wednesday night.
Patenaude started in net for Saint John, William Grimard for Cape Breton.
Saint John were without defenceman Hunter Gartley and Ben Roode, and forward Julian Vander Voet (healthy scratches).
Saint John had a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission after a pair of goals from Joshua Roy. Leighton Carruthers had his first goal in the QMJHL at the twelve minute mark when he came bursting over the blueline and ripped a wrister past Grimard. The Eagles scored with 20 seconds left in the first to cut the lead to one.
The Sea Dogs were held scoreless in the second period while the Eagles retaliated with three straight markers to take a 5-3 lead into the third. Charles Savoie had the puck bounce off his skates and into the Eagles net but after review it was deemed to be kicked in and was announced as no goal.
Six goals were scored in the third period with each team adding three. Stairs scored to open the period and get the Sea Dogs within one but the Eagles responded 30 seconds later to make it 6-4, before adding another at 13:25. Brady Burns came alive in the final five minutes scoring a pair for the Sea Dogs three minutes apart to bring them within one with under two minutes to play. Patenaude was pulled from the Sea Dogs net for the extra attacker and the Eagles scored an empty netter to end the comeback and take the game 8-6. Saint John peppered Grimard for 20 shots in the final frame finishing with 41 shots to Cape Breton's 34.
Burns, Roy, Poirier, Stairs and Carruthers all had two point nights.
