Charlotte, NC -- The Charlotte Eagles continue to add members for the 2013 USL PRO season. The team has announced the signing of former Wake Forest Defender/Midfielder Ben Newnam and former High Point Defender Fejiro Okiomah.
Newnam, 21, is a 5'10 160 lb Midfielder/Defender from
Kernersville, NC and a East Forsyth HS Alum. Newnam finished his Demon Deacon career with four goals and eight assists for 16 points while playing in 74 games, starting 52 of those contests. Prior to Wake Forest Newnam was named the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in 2008-09. He was also twice named NSCAA/Adidas All-American while in high school.
Okiomah, 22, a 6'2 200 lb Austin, TX native finished his career with 19 goals, while also starting 70 of his career 80
games for the Panthers. His 12 goals in 2010 were tied for the team lead that season and was also good for the 2nd best total in High Point University history. He was a two-timeAll Big South First Team selection in 2010 and 2012, and was also a two-time All Big South Second Team selection in 2009 and 2011. 2010 was Okiomah's breakout year, he registered 27 points, from 12 goals and 3 assists, which is good for 3rd most in High Point history. In 2010 he was also named to the All Big South Tournament Team after a strong tournament performance in which High Point made it to the final before losing to Coastal Carolina.
Both signings give Men's Head Coach Mark Steffens some versatility in the midfield and defense as both players have experience at multiple positions.
Coach Steffens had this to add about his two newest players " Fejiro Okiomah brings a whole bunch of athleticism to our defensive group. He is a big, fast, explosive defender who is also strong in the air. The coaching staff is not only excited about his athletic prowess but also about the technical ability that he brings to the game. He will be a strong player in this league.
Ben Newnam is a real versatile player who brings a wealth of D1 college experience to the team. He is tactically sound and seems to think the game quicker than most first year players. A real technical player who will help our club in many different ways. "
