Charlotte Eagles News Release
Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Eagles are welcoming expansion side Phoenix FC to the Queens Sports Complex on Saturday, July 27th at 7 pm. The Eagles are coming off of a thrilling 3-3 comeback draw against the Los Angeles Blues on Thursday, July 25th. Phoenix and Charlotte played to a 2-2 draw at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ back on Thursday, May 23rd.
The Charlotte Eagles and Los Angeles Blues played to a thrilling 3-3 draw in midweek USL PRO action. Los Angeles took a 3-2 lead into the break and were on their way to passing the Eagles in the standings before Drew Yates scored a second half stoppage-time goal to earn the draw. Charlotte now sits with a 8-2-10 record and remains in 4th place in the USL PRO standings. Jorge Herrera has scored five goals and recorded four assists in his last nine games, including a goal and two assists Thursday against the Blues.
Herrera's current form has led him straight to the top of the team goal-scoring chart with seven goals and four assists on the season. Christian Ramirez sits alone in second place with five goals while Christian Meza has scored four times this season. Nate Thornton has scored three times and is only one goal ahead of five Eagles who have scored twice this season.
The Eagles are currently sitting in 4th place in the USL PRO with a 8-2-10 record and 34 points. The 10 draws so far this season, for both Charlotte and the Rochester Rhinos, have tied the USL PRO record, set by Dayton in 2012.
The Phoenix FC Wolves are coming into Saturday's matchup having secured seven points in their last five league matches. The first year side is coming off a tough 5-1 loss at the hands of the Charleston Battery on Wednesday, July 24th and will be looking to rebound against the Eagles.
The Wolves are led in scoring by Thomas Ramos with four goals. The Phoenix, AZ native played his collegiate soccer at Cal State-Northridge. Former Real Salt Lake homegrown player Donny Toia and Scott Morrison are tied for second on the team with three goals apiece.
Scott Morrison was signed by Phoenix FC prior to the 2013 season after playing for Scottish Premier League side Ross County FC. Morrison played four seasons for Ross County and previously played with current Phoenix teammate Darren Mackie for Aberdeen FC.
