Eagles Rally for 5-4 Shootout Win over Tulsa
January 9, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
TULSA, OK. - Eagles forwards Michael Joly and Jake Marchment each collected a pair of goals as Colorado erased three separate two-goal deficits to defeat the Tulsa Oilers 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday. Joe Cannata claimed the win in net, stopping 41 of the 45 shots he faced in the contest.
The Oilers jumped on top early when forward Charlie Sampair slapped a loose puck on the top of the crease past Cannata to give Tulsa a 1-0 edge just 1:04 into the contest.
Sampair would stretch the lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later when he snagged an Eagles turnover in the low-slot and backhanded the puck into the back of the net.
Colorado would finally strike back when Matt Garbowsky found Joly at the bottom of the left circle, setting Joly up to light the lamp with a wrister and slice Tulsa's advantage to 2-1 at the 8:29 mark of the first period. The goal was Joly's league-leading 25th of the season.
The Oilers would regain their two-goal advantage when forward Alexandre Ranger fired a wrist shot from the left wing boards off the face-off to put Tulsa on top 3-1 just 4:32 into the second period of play.
Colorado would earn its first power play of the game midway through the middle frame and they would take advantage when Marchment snagged a loose puck on top of the crease and slid it past the outstretched leg pad of Oilers goaltender Jake Hildebrand to trim Tulsa's lead to 3-2 at the 13:18 mark of the second period.
Forward Garrett Ladd would put the Oilers back up by a pair when he stuffed home a rebound in the crease just nine seconds into the third period, giving Tulsa the 4-2 advantage.
Less than six minutes later Marchment would generate his second goal of the evening when he won a net-mouth scramble and lit the lamp to draw the Eagles closer and cut the Oilers lead to 4-3.
With time winding down in the contest, Colorado would pull Cannata in favor of the extra attacker and the move would pay off, as Joly snapped a wrister from between the circles past Hildebrand to knot the game at 4-4 with 2:22 remaining in the third period.
The goal would force sudden-death overtime, but neither team would be able to find the back of the net and the game would shift to a shootout. Joly would best Hildebrand, while Cannata denied all three Tulsa shooters, as the Eagles completed the comeback with the 5-4 win.
Colorado finished the night going 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Oilers were stymied on all three of their opportunities on the man-advantage.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, January 7th at 3:05pm MT when they take on the Tulsa Oilers at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
