Charlotte Eagles News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charlotte Eagles bounced back after a tough loss last Saturday to earn a point on Saturday night against the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,698 fans.

"This is a tie and we wanted three points," Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser said. "Defensively we did a really good job. It was good to get a shutout. We just need to get that mix back and get one or two goals."

Neither team was able to get much going in the first half. While possession was relatively even, the Battery had the best opportunities of the half. Justin Portillo took the first shot on goal for the Battery in the ninth minute when he collected the ball just outside the penalty area, cut to the middle and had his shot saved easily by Charlotte goalkeeper Brock Duckworth.

Quinton Griffith had the best chance of the first half for Charleston but was unable to convert. After midfielder Jared van Schaik sent a pass to forward Dane Kelly at the top of the box, Kelly found Griffith on the end of a run from the right side, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Charlotte midfielder Fred Sekyere came close to opening the score in the 81st minute but his shot from distance was inches wide of the post.

Both teams pushed forward late in the second half and battled down to the last minute. On the last chance of the match, Charleston midfielder Maikel Chang made a long run down the right side from his defensive half before passing to forward Haviel Cordoves. The Cuban forward turned and got off a shot that rolled inches wide of the goal. The game ended scoreless on the ensuing goal kick.

Goalkeeper Brock Duckworth recorded his third shutout of the season making two saves on 12 shots faced.

The Eagles will return home on Monday, July 14th as first-year USLPRO members Sacramento Republic FC visits Queens Sports Complex. Tickets can be purchased at a discount rate up until midnight Sunday night. Tickets will also be on sale at the gate starting at 6 pm Monday.
