Charlotte Eagles News Release
(Greensboro, NC) The Charlotte Eagles faced the Premiere Development League (PDL) Carolina Dynamo Wednesday night at McPherson Stadium. Despite being behind 1-0 early in the match, the Eagles came back for the 4-2 victory.
The Carolina Dynamo started off the scoring in the 9th minute of play. Scott Jones pushed a pass into the middle for Markus Story at the top of the six yard box. Story, open at the far post, had an easy finish, providing Eagles goalkeeper Eric Pattison little chance at a save, The Eagles tried to answer in the 13th minute. Defender Declan Jogi lofted a lead pass into Jacob Coggins at the top of the Carolina eighteen. Coggins controlled with his chest, and fired on goal, but his shot was saved by the Dynamo goalkeeper. In the 29th minute, Charlotte again on the attack, found Dustin Swinehart with a feed from Chris Lemons. Swinehart got a head on the ball at the right post, but sent the shot just wide. Charlotte finally tied things up in the 33rd minute. Midfielder Ishmael Mintah threaded a long lead pass through the defense, creating the break for Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart's beautifully placed shot snuck just inside the right post, for his 9th goal of the season. The half ended even at one goal a piece.
Charlotte got the next lead of the game 14 minutes into the second half. Eagles defender Aaron Faro hit a long ball forward for Jacob Coggins at the top of Carolina's 18 yard box. Coggins touched a pass off to Jonah Long, making a curling run toward the goal. Long's low shot to the far left post gave Charlotte the 2-1 lead. The Dynamo tied things back up in the 61st minute, when Carolina was awarded a penalty kick. The penalty was called on Declan Jogi, for a questionable trip in the box. Tim Merritt took the kick for Carolina and put it just wide of diving Eric Pattison's reach, for the equalizer. The Eagles thought they had the lead back in the 70th minute, when Dustin Swinehart got a breakaway and was alone heading to goal. He made a nice move around the keeper, but stumbled, missing the open goal chance. Just three minutes later Juan Munoz-Airey got the third goal for Charlotte to take back the lead. Eagles defender Declan Jogi served a ball into Carolina territory but it was knocked back out to the top of the 18. Juan was there to finish with a hard shot to the bottom left corner of the net. The Eagles wrapped up the scoring in the 84th minute. Dustin Swinehart set up the goal with a pass to Charlotte local Jacob Coggins at the top of the box. Coggins made a quick change of speed move, turned and fired a low shot slipping under the dive of the Dynamo goalkeeper. It was Jacob's 13th goal of the season. Coggins now leads the league in goals and total points.
Charlotte was excited about the victory, which helps maintain their lead in the Southern Division at 11-2-1 for 34 points. It was also nice to beat Carolina after losing to them earlier in the season, 2-4 in the first round of the Open Cup tournament. The Eagles return to home field action this Saturday night, at Waddell Stadium hosting the Westchester Flames. Kickoff is at 8:00 pm following the Lady Eagles match against Richmond at 5:30 pm. Don't forget to bring some socks for Charlotte Rescue Mission's "Sock Out Homelessness" sock drive.
