Charlotte Eagles News Release

Cary, NC - The Charlotte Eagles and the Carolina Railhawks announced the transfer today of Joseph Kabwe from the Eagles to the Railhawks in 2009. After playing three stellar seasons for the Eagles in USL-2, the crafty midfielder from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe will play his first season in USL-1 for the former Charlotte Eagle and new Railhawks coach, Martin Rennie.

Kabwe, an amazingly skilled midfielder, played his collegiate career at Carolina Coastal University where he earned All-American Honors including being named the Mid South Conference Player of the Year in 2003. It was also during this time that Kabwe represented his native Zimbabwe in several National Team appearances.

The transfer of Kabwe to the Railhawks is another positive sign that Head Coach Martin Rennie is putting together a fine team that will immediately be a challenger for the USL-1 Title. Rennie spoke of the impact Kabwe will make to the 2009 squad. "Joseph Kabwe is probably one of the most creative players I have seen since I came to America," said RailHawks Head Coach Martin Rennie. "He's really good on the ball, creates chances for his teammates and sometimes scores himself. We are really happy to have him."

During his time with Charlotte, Kabwe became a constant threat to opponents on the left flank and assisted the Eagles to three playoff appearances in his three years. Those years included two USL-2 Championship appearances and the 2008 Regular Season Championship. Kabwe was also named to the USL-2 Team of the Week five times during his three year stint in Charlotte with 7 goals and 11 assists.

Joseph not only left a mark on the field during those years, but he also was heavily involved in the Greater Charlotte community. When Kabwe was not playing for the Eagles during the season, he was coaching youth soccer for South Charlotte Soccer Assocation, Eagles Soccer Camps and the Eagles Elite Training Academy (the Eagles' new personal training program).

Joseph's character was something that left a lasting impression on the community, his teammates and the organization according to Eagles General Manager, Tom Engstrom. "We support Joseph with this opportunity and are excited about his future in Cary," stated Engstrom. "Joseph is a great person who has made a significant contribution to the Eagles on the soccer field the last three years and also in the community. He has poured himself into the lives of youth in Charlotte through the Eagles Academy, the South Charlotte Soccer Association and Charlotte Christian School. We expect him to do well and positively impact the Triangle community."

Helping to fill the role that Joseph played in the Eagles Academy Training Program will be Eagles star midfielder and Colombia native, Jorge Herrera. A 2008 USL-2 MVP finalist, Herrera's skill and coaching ability will be a major asset to the Eagles Academy.
