Eagles and Dutch Lions End in Scoreless Draw
July 20, 2013 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charlotte Eagles News Release
Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Eagles and Dayton Dutch Lions played to a scoreless draw in front of 1,032 people on Saturday night at Queens Sports Complex. The draw, the Eagles' ninth of the season, moves the Eagles to 4th place in the USL PRO Standings. Goalkeepers Matt Williams and Eric Reed both played outstanding tonight and recorded nine saves between them.
Charlotte opened the game with some good offensive pressure trying to capitalize on a Dayton team who played Friday night in Charleston. Juan Guzman got the first good chance, but his left-footed shot didn't find the mark.
Drew Yates found Stephen Okai on a give-and-go, but Okai's shot was saved by a sliding Matt Williams. Yates beat the Dutch Lions offside trap in the 36th minute but his shot was off the mark keeping the game scoreless.
Dayton's best chance came with five minutes left in the first half as Remco Klaasse's shot hit the left post. Klaasse found the woodwork again in the 45th minute as his header went off the crossbar. The match headed into the break scoreless.
The Dutch Lions opened the second half with a flurry as Eli Garner's shot was denied by a sliding Eric Reed. Charlotte's Samuel Asante had his header fall just wide of the post in the 47th minute after a good combination play in the middle of the field.
Dayton came close to opening the scoring but Brock Granger's free kick was covered well by Reed.
Charlotte's second half subs, Nate Thornton and Christian Meza, combined well late in the contest but Meza's header off of a Thornton cross hit the crossbar and deflected wide. Thornton was dangerous again late but his shot hit the far post and rolled wide.
Dayton had the final chance off of a free kick but Eric Reed punched the shot wide of his post and the game ended 0-0.
The Eagles will be back in action this Wednesday as the Los Angeles Blues come to town. The Eagles and Blues are now only separated by a point with the draw the Eagles earned tonight. Charlotte is now alone in 4th place with a 8-2-9 record and 33 points.
