Houston Dynamo FC News Release
The Houston Dynamo fell to the San Antonio Scorpions 1-0 on Tuesday night in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Scorpions, an expansion club in the North American Soccer League, advance to the quarterfinals to meet the Charlotte Eagles on June 5. San Antonio midfielder Hans Denissen converted a penalty in the 51st minute for the winning goal. Schedule note: The Dynamo are off on Wednesday and will not practice.
The penalty kick was awarded to the Scorpions after Dynamo defender Warren Creavalle took down Pablo Campos in the penalty area after San Antonio midfielder Kevin Harmse lofted a ball in behind the Houston defense.
The Dynamo's best chance to score came at the end of the first half when midfielder Alex Dixon received a pass just outside the top of the penalty area. The Dynamo Academy product ripped a first-time strike ticketed for the upper corner of the net, but Scorpions goalkeeper Daryl Sattler dove high and far to his left to parry it away for a great save.
A minute before Sattler's great save, Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric produced a fantastic stop of his own. After a Houston corner kick, Esteban Bayona broke free from midfield and raced in alone on the Dynamo penalty area. Deric charged off his line and waited until the last moment to go down for a save and blocked Bayona's shot with his legs.
Deric, who has three shutouts for the Dynamo Reserves this season, came up big again in the 59th minute. Dennison charged in alone into the left side of the penalty area and drilled a low shot towards the net. Deric stayed low and produced a one-handed save with his left glove.
Dixon came close again in the 63rd minute, taking a good touch to clear space 25 yards from goal before cracking a low shot that sailed just wide of the near post.
It was a night of debuts for several Dynamo players as midfielder Brian Ownby, defender Oscar Recio, forward Colin Rolfe and Creavalle each made their first appearance in the U.S. Open Cup.
The Dynamo will return to the pitch on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup with Valencia CF of Spain. A limited quantity of tickets is available. It is a historic first-ever meeting between the Dynamo and a club for Spain. Valencia finished in third place in Liga BBVA this season and has qualified for the UEFA Champions League in five of the last seven seasons.
