Dylan Ray Named Texas League Pitcher of the Week

May 5, 2025 - Texas League (TL)
Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

AMARILLO, TX - Minor League Baseball today announced that Amarillo Sod Poodles right-handed pitcher Dylan Ray is the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 29 - May 4. Rated as the Diamondbacks number 20 prospect (MLB Pipeline), Ray shined among top Texas League talent over Amarillo's most recent road series against the Midland RockHounds (Double-A, Athletics).

In his Saturday night start on May 3 against the RockHounds, Ray spun six innings of shutout ball, allowing only two hits while striking out eight Midland batters on Amarillo's way to a 4-0 win. He retired nine batters in a row after allowing a pair of baserunners to open the fourth and finished his evening on the hill with his second winning decision of the year. His six frames of work matches a season high while his eight punchouts are the most he has tallied in a game this season. It was his first quality start since August 8, 2024 when he allowed three runs in six innings at HODGETOWN against Northwest Arkansas (Double-A, Kansas City Royals), striking out five Naturals that evening.

Among Texas League pitching, Ray was one of only two pitchers (Henry Baez, San Antonio) to record at least six shutout innings in a game during the week. He is also now one of two pitchers in the Texas League this season to allow no more than two hits while not issuing a walk over at least six shutout innings. He continues to dominate against left-handed hitting this season as he retired all eight lefties he faced on Saturday. For the year, lefties are batting .136 (6-for-44) with 10 strikeouts and a .493 OPS against him.

Ray becomes the first Sod Poodle to win Texas League Pitcher of the Week since Billy Corcoran who started two games from May 28 - June 2, 2024 where he tallied 12 innings while allowing one run on three hits and two walks, striking out nine batters. It is the first time Ray has been recognized since winning Northwest League Pitcher of the Month for July 2023 with the Hillsboro Hops. For that month, he made four starts, totaling 25 innings of work where he allowed two runs on 13 hits while striking out 26 batters, earning the win in all four. To close out the month, he spun seven scoreless innings, striking out eight batters while allowing two hits and two hit batters on July 27 against Tri-City (High-A, Los Angeles Angels).

The Sod Poodles are back at HODGETOWN this week as they take on the Tulsa Drillers (Double-A, Los Angeles Dodgers) for a six-game set beginning tomorrow morning with a scheduled 11:05 a.m. first pitch. Single-game tickets are available and can be purchased HERE or at the box office located outside the third base gate on Buchanan Street.
