Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive's seven-game win streak came to a close on Sunday afternoon, as the Hickory Crawdads used the long ball to their advantage in a 3-1 victory at Fluor Field.
In his first home start since April 10th, Jay Groome (1-2) set down the Crawdads (14-10, 41-53) on just eight pitches in the top of the first, but the Crawdads took a 1-0 lead in the second when Alex Kowalczyk drilled a second-inning solo shot. Later in the frame, Franklin Rollin and Elio Castillo hit two-out singles to add to the lead.
The early support was plenty for Hickory starter Kyle Cody (5-6), who held the Drive (11-12, 52-41) scoreless over six innings while striking out eight.
Despite the speed bump in the second, Groome put together a solid outing for Greenville, as he pitched five innings and struck out seven Hickory batters.
The score remained 2-0 into the eighth, when Rollin blasted a solo homer over the Green Monster seats to add to Hickory's lead.
The Drive threatened against the Crawdads in the eighth inning when Lorenzo Cedrola led off the inning with a double and Santiago Espinal followed up with a single. Tyler Hill then slashed an RBI single to put the Drive on the board, but a double play ended the rally attempt.
Isaias Lucena led the Drive offense with three hits, while Lorenzo Cedrola chipped in with two hits.
The rubber game of the series at Fluor Field begins on Monday at a special time of 11:05 AM. Left-hander Jhonathan Diaz (3-3, 5.95) will start for the Drive, and he will face off against Crawdads right-hander Walker Weickel (2-1, 2.12).
