Dragons take first trip to East coast
June 15, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
San Francisco Dragons News Release
San Francisco, CA -The San Francisco Dragons are set to travel eastward to face The Boston Cannons this Saturday at Nickerson Field in Boston, MA. This meeting marks the first game the Dragons will have against an eastern conference team.
As West Coast and East Coast collide on the lacrosse field, some aren't convinced of any fundamental difference between the two.
"We play a much different style than (Western Conference foe) Denver," remarks Dragons Head Coach, Brian Silcott, "in fact I think we are more like Boston than Denver, but really every team has it's own style and it has little to do with what coast you are on."
There may be no difference inherent in the style of play, but the one thing about the Eastern Conference that can't be argued is the fact that it is established. Formed in 1999, Major League Lacrosse (MLL) began play in 2001 with six eastern teams, and this year it has added four more teams to form the Western Conference. Prior to the Western Conference, eastern teams were divided into the American and National divisions. By 2008, MLL plans to add two more Western Conference expansion teams.
One of the original six eastern teams, the Boston Cannons were the American Division Champions in both 2004 and 2005.
Entering this week's contest, the Dragons are coming off a wild game (W 25-20) with previously undefeated Denver; it was a game which saw 45 points scored, 9 goals of which were courtesy of Ryan Powell, the Bud Light Player of the game, and this week's MLL Offensive Player of the Week. "Ryan's 9 (goals) and 3 (assists) performance was incredible;" remarks Silcott, "he proved once again that he plays this game at a different level than everyone else... in many ways RP dominating the game was not a surprise."
The game will be played in Boston at 7:00 PM EDT, and broadcast (tape delay) in the Bay Area on Comcast SportsNet West on Wednesday, June 21 at 7:00 PDT.
Notes: The Dragons have scored over 20 points in each of their last two games...three current members of the Dragons were on Boston's roster last year, midfielders Peter Inge, Jarret Park and Chris Rotelli...Boston is one week removed from roughing-up the expansion LA Riptide 20-13 in LA, the 20 points are a season high for Boston... after dropping their respective season openers, both the Dragons and the Cannons have since gone undefeated...the Dragons lead the MLL in scoring average (18.67 PPG) and have allowed the fewest GA (Goals Against) in the MLL (39 goals in three games).
