Dragons Acquire Top Selections In Trade

Burlingame (CA) - The San Francisco Dragons of Major League Lacrosse announced today the club has traded Ryan Powell and Nate Watkins to the Denver Outlaws in exchange for two first round, and one second round selections in MLL Collegiate Draft. In the transaction, San Francisco received the 7th overall selection (1st round) and the 17th overall selection (2nd round) in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft, and Denver's 1st round selection in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft. With this transaction the Dragons now have 3 selections in the first 17 and 7 total selections in 2008, in what is believed to be one of the strongest drafts in some time, while now controlling two 1st round selections in the 2009 draft, also a very strong draft.

Ryan Powell and Nate Watkins have been with the franchise since its inaugural season in 2006 and have played key roles for the Dragons during that time. Powell was the MLL Most Valuable Player in 2006 after scoring 34 goals and adding 24 assists for 58 points. In 2007 he recorded 18 goals and added 22 assists for 41 points. Watkins scored 3 goals and added 5 assists for 8 points in 2007 and had 15 goals and 5 assists in 2006.

"Ryan Powell is one of the best lacrosse players in the world, and trading him was something that was very difficult, however Tom (Slate) and I felt that we needed to take advantage of the strength of the next two draft cycles to build our team," Executive Vice President and General Manger Doug Locker said. "The opportunity to select three players in the top 17 of this class and 2 of the top 10 in next year's draft class gives us a chance to improve our club immediately, and in the end we could not pass up that prospect". Locker continued, "We are very grateful for the efforts put forth on behalf of the Dragons by both Ryan and Nate, and wish them all the best in the years to come."
