
Dr. Simard Announces 2021 Award Winners
December 23, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
Montreal, QC - After awarding $5,000 to three student-athletes last year, Dr. Sylvain Simard doubled up the amount this season to reward six QMJHL players who studied in applied sciences programs.
The recipients of the 2021 Dr. Sylvain Simard Award are Conor Frenette and Tristan Luneau (Gold Award), Vincent Sévigny and Conor Trenholm (Silver Award) as well as Xavier Bouchard and Jacob Stewart (Bronze Award).
Created in December 2019, the "Dr. Sylvain Simard Award" is named in honour of the former player and current doctor of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, Sylvain Simard. Through the QMJHL Foundation, Dr. Simard supports students currently studying in applied science classes such as mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics. The grants are awarded as follows:
Gold Award: $2,500
Silver Award: $1,500
Bronze Award: $1,000
To earn the Gold Award, Conor Frenette and Tristan Luneau stood out among a total of 38 candidates. Frenette completed four applied science classes at Cégep de Victoriaville to obtain his college diploma (DEC). As for Luneau, he successfully passed his four Secondary 5 science classes at l'Académie des Estacades and maintained grades way above average in doing so.
Vincent Sévigny also obtained his college diploma (DEC) by successfully completing four applied sciences classes at Cégep de Victoriaville. Conor Trenholm, winner of the 2020 Silver Award, had another terrific year in school by successfully completing three Grade 12 science classes at Sydney Academy.
Finally, our two Bronze Award winners were both University students last season. Xavier Bouchard took four of seven classes in applied sciences at the University of Ottawa during the 2020-2021 season. As for Jacob Stewart, he maintained an average significantly above other students in his two science classes at the University of New Brunswick.
About Dr. Sylvain Simard
Born in 1964, Dr. Sylvain Simard is a QMJHL alumnus and general practitioner. He played four seasons in the QMJHL in the early 80's, both with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens and the Shawinigan Cataractes. Chicoutimi's first round pick in 1981, he scored no less than 93 goals and picked up 197 points in 189 regular season games. Following his junior career, he pursued his education at McGill University where he obtained his doctorate in 1991.
