Doug Plumb Named NBLC Coach of the Year
May 24, 2022 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) News Release
London Lightning head coach Doug Plumb, who helmed his squad to the league's best record, has been named NBL Coach of the Year, league officials announced today.
"He's the kind of coach who will work harder than every one of his players. He puts 100 per cent of himself into everything he does," Lightning GM Mark Frijia said.
Frijia continued, "He's a coach that can spot talent and work his hardest to help that player maximize it. Doug works harder than any coach I have ever seen. He practices what he preaches - he expects the best out of himself and his players every day.
The 33-year-old Plumb's resume includes stints as both an assistant coach and head coach with the St. John's Edge and elite skill development with the likes of Nike Basketball, NBA players, and some of Canada's talented young high-school and college athletes.
In 2019-20, Plumb led the Lightning to a 15-8 record, as they sat atop the central division before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the season. Previously, Plumb served as the team's assistant coach in 2016-17 before taking over as head coach.
"Hands down, the hardest-working coach in the league this year," said Audley Stephenson, NBLC VP of Basketball Operations. "Intense. Focused. He always has his team's goals in mind. I am not surprised at the success he has had this season. He has earned this honour by bringing out the best in every member of his team. His love of the game and passion for it shines through."
Plumb is the third member of Lightning franchise to win the award, following Michael Ray Richardson in 2011-12 and 2012-13 and Kyle Julius in 2016-17. Previous winners of the NBL Canada Coach of the Year Award include:
