Donovan Morgan takes Rookie of the Year

August 19, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Tulsa Talons offensive specialist DONOVAN MORGAN has been named the af2 Rookie of the Year, as voted on by af2 head coaches and beat writers.

Morgan, a speedy 24-year old out of Pearl River Community College (Mississippi), re-wrote the record book for scoring during the 2005 season. Shattering the scoring record that stood since the league's inaugural season, Morgan racked up 346 total points in 15 games. The old mark was 284 points by SHON KING (Quad City - 2000). Morgan also set a new single season high with 54 touchdown receptions, breaking JACK WALKER JR'S record of 45 during the 2003 season with Peoria.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Morgan led his team with 121 receptions and 1,687 yards. His reception total was sixth best in the league while his yardage ranked second best. Morgan also returned 35 kickoffs for 686 yards (19.6 average) and two touchdowns. He recorded four or more touchdown receptions nine times during the season. He also amassed 100 or more receiving yards in 10 games.

In the only game he failed to catch a touchdown, June 4 at Central Valley, Morgan made contributions in other ways. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and caught the game winning two-point conversion with no time remaining in the contest to give the Talons a one-point win over the Coyotes.

Morgan was selected as Offensive Player of the Game 11 times, and he earned Offense Player of the Week honors one time. After the Talons' season ended Morgan signed a contract from the NFL's Houston Texans. He is currently participating in the Texan's training camp.

The only other player in Tulsa's franchise history to be honored with a season award is former offensive specialist and current Tulsa offensive coordinator Mitch Allner. He was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2002 for Tulsa.
