Diversity key to ABA growth
May 17, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. "In answer to the many questions relating to the rapid growth of the ABA," Joe Newman, ABA CEO stated, "We truly believe that the key to our record-setting growth is diversity of ownership. About 60% of the ABA teams are owned by African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians or women making the ABA the most inclusive professional sports league ever. Diversity is the heart and soul of the ABA and we are very proud of it. We are also very pleased and proud to have former NBA, NFL, MLB and top entertainers as part of our ownership groups."
"Of course, the ABA business model is second to none. It is easier to own and operate an ABA team than any other professional sports team and that is very important also," Newman added. "We also receive questions regularly asking if there are opportunities for partial ownership of teams. And the answer is definitely yes as we encourage local ownership, especially when it adds to the marketing capabilities and to diversity. Many of our owners have made it very affordable and attractive to become partners in their operations."

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
