Dexter Davis Named AFL Defensive Player of the Week

BALTIMORE, MD - The Arena Football League announced today that Baltimore Brigade DL Dexter Davis has been named Defensive Player of the Week for games played on the weekend of April 14-16. Davis recorded four solo tackles, including three sacks, to go along with two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in Baltimore's 52-49 win over the Cleveland Gladiators on April 16.
"We are really excited about his performance," said Brigade Head Coach Omarr Smith. "He is an impactful player and his play on the field went a long way for us in terms of winning that ball game. We have high expectations for Dexter and we know we can expect performances like this going forward."
Davis' first sack and forced fumble came at the 4:09 mark of the second quarter with DB Trey Wolfe recovering the loose ball. His second sack of the game came with 0:34 remaining in the opening half, ending a Cleveland drive and giving Baltimore the opportunity to extend its lead to 21-7 going into halftime. Davis' final sack and second forced fumble, which he recovered himself, came with 7:50 remaining in the contest. Davis fell on the ball at the Cleveland four yard line and set up a three-play drive for the Brigade offense that extended their lead to 49-35.
"I just tried to do everything I could to put the team in a position to win," said Davis. "Coach [Walt] Housman did a good job preparing us so I was really just doing what I was coached."
Davis leads the AFL in both forced fumbles (3) and fumble recoveries (2) and is second in the league in unassisted tackles for loss (3), trailing only teammate Khreem Smith (4).
Davis is playing in his third AFL season, having spent the 2015 and 2016 season with the Portland Steel, where he recorded 39 tackles, seven sacks and 10 pass break-ups. In Baltimore's season-opening matchup with the Washington Valor, Davis recovered a fumble and returned it 44 yards for a Brigade touchdown.
