October 31, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Detroit Fury News Release
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -The Detroit Fury of the Arena Football League signed two former Michigan State University players to their roster - Cedric Henry (DS) and Dawan Moss (FB/LB). The Fury also signed former Illinois player Luke Butkus (OL/DL), the nephew of legendary Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus.
Henry, a defensive specialist, returns to Detroit after spending training camp with the San Diego Chargers in 2003. A four-year player for the Spartans, Henry finished his college career with 145 tackles, four tackles for a loss, seven interceptions and 42 pass breakups.
Moss, a Detroit native, played four seasons at MSU. He played three seasons at fullback before switching to tailback during his senior season. As a fullback, Moss played in 34 games, starting 17 of them. He accumulated 265 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 73 attempts in his first three years. During his senior season, Moss rushed 125 times for 592 yards and four touchdowns.
"Both of these kids are very good athletes," said Assistant Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Tom Luginbill. "We really would like our FB/LB's to be offensive and Moss is a nice runner. Henry is a pesky, physical player and a good tackler. We must be a better tackling team this year. I hope both of these guys come in ready to compete. I know MSU fans will love to watch these guys here in Detroit."
Butkus brings a strong football tradition to the Fury. The 6'2", 300 lbs. lineman comes to Detroit after spending the 2003 season in NFL Europe as a member of the Rhein Fire. He also spent the 2002 NFL season on the practice squads of the Chicago Bears and the San Diego Chargers. A four-year center at the University of Illinois, Butkus will be the Fury's third center in training camp.
"The center position is so critical in the AFL," said Luginbill. "With Butkus we feel that we have added another fine player to compete with Curt Lessman and Matt Norwood. All three of them are experienced veterans in professional football."
The Fury will return for their fourth season of Arena Football League action at The Palace of Auburn Hills on February 5, 2004. Season tickets for the Fury can be purchased by calling (248) 377-0100, and additional information can be found at www.detroitfury.com.
