Despite loss, Wolves still first in coaches poll

June 30, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - For the fourth consecutive week, the Manchester Wolves have received the No.1 ranking in the Weekly Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. Manchester collected 220 of a possible 228 points in the securing of the top position.

The Wolves total included 11 first-place votes, down from 16 last week. Just behind the Wolves in the No.2 ranking, the Memphis Xplorers received 209 points and six first-place tallies. The defending ArenaCup Champion Florida Firecats couldn't crack the top two and stayed at the No.3 spot despite both Manchester and Memphis losing last week.

Four teams traded spots this week. Green Bay moved from fifth to fourth after earning their first playoff berth in franchise history on Friday night. They traded spots with the Tulsa Talons who dropped from fourth to fifth. Quad City edged Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the No.10 ranking after defeating No.1 ranked Manchester last week. The Pioneers now hold the No.11 ranking.

After this week's league wide bye the arenafootball2 Week 15 schedule features four matchups of Top 12 teams. On Friday night at 7:30, the No.1 Manchester Wolves host the No.11 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. Saturday night features two games between Top 12 teams with the No.2 ranked Memphis Xplorers hosting the fifth ranked Tulsa Talons at 8:00 p.m and the fourth ranked Green Bay Blizzard hitting the road to take on the No.10 ranked Quad City Steamwheelers at 8:30 p.m. The Week 15 schedule rounds out on Sunday with the eighth ranked Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz traveling to face the sixth ranked Amarillo Dusters at 4:00 p.m. All Times Eastern.

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 12 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
