Despite Loss, Danger Remain #1
May 8, 2013 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
Richmond, VA - A true testament to the parity that exists in the Indoor Football League, for the first time since Weeks 6 and 7 a team has been voted as the #1 team in the Coaches Poll for consecutive weeks.
The Nebraska Danger (6-3) remain in the top spot despite falling to the Sioux Falls Storm, 43-41. For the second consecutive week, the Danger found themselves in physical battle that came down to the wire. However, this time around, the Danger's 2nd ranked offense (48.1 points per game) was unable to get anything going late in the 2nd half and was held scoreless by the Storm defense in the 4th quarter. The Danger will look to get back on track this week against the streaking Green Bay Blizzard, who have won 2 straight since Chad Baldwin took over the reigns as Head Coach.
The Storm (6-3) move up two spots to #2 in this week's poll. After the Danger ended the Storm's 21-game win streak earlier in the season, Sioux Falls had another prestigious steak on the line Saturday. With the 43-41 victory, the Storm extended their consecutive home game win streak to 29. LB Tyler Knight was named Defensive Player of the Week after his 16 tackle performance against the Danger. This weekend, the Storm travel to Cedar Rapids to take on the Titans in an important United Conference matchup.
Following a 51-41 win over the Wyoming Cavalry, the Colorado Ice (6-3) remain at #3 in this week's Poll. This I-25 rivalry game was highly contested throughout, with the difference coming in the kicking game. After converting on 5 of 7 field goal attempts and 4 of 4 PAT's, Colorado Kicker Philip Welch earned Special Teams of the Week honors. The Ice are on a bye this week. They will return to action in Week 14 vs. the Tri-Cities Fever.
Dropping two spots from #2 to #4 this week is the Chicago Slaughter (6-4). After earning their biggest win of the season against the Storm in Week 11, the Slaughter returned home from a road trip to Texas with a 48-23 loss at the hands of the Revolution. In a precursor of the outcome of the game, the Revs held QB Cody Kirby and the rest of the Slaughter offense scoreless in the 1st half. Fortunately for the Slaughter, they will get their chance for revenge as the teams play again this weekend, this time in Chicago.
The Cedar Rapids Titans (5-4) round out the top 5 this week. The Titans lost in a 70-68 shootout against the Tri-Cities Fever on Saturday night. A team that started the season 4-0 is now in search of answers after losing 4 of their last 5 games. Look no further than the defensive side of the football for the source of the Titans struggles. In their 5 wins, the unit is allowing only 28.8 points per game. In 4 losses, the team is giving up an astounding 60.75 points per game. The Titans host the Storm in a critical matchup, with playoff implications, this weekend.
Spots 6-9 remain unchanged, belonging to the Green Bay Blizzard, Texas Revolution, Tri-Cities Fever, and Wyoming Cavalry. The Blizzard (3-5) return fresh from a bye week to take on the Danger this weekend. After defeating the Slaughter, the Revs (4-5) are preparing for another battle between the teams this weekend. A win will put the Revs right back into the thick of things in the United Conference playoff race. QB Dante Warren (Offensive Player of the Week) has led a resurgent Fever team to back-to-back wins for the first time in 2013. The Cavalry (1-7) will look to get back into the win column this weekend when they host the Fever.
