IFL Indoor Football League

Defending Champs Back at the Top

Published on May 29, 2013 under Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

Richmond, VA - The two-time defending United Bowl Champion Sioux Falls Storm retake the top spot in the Week 16 IFL Coaches Poll.

The Storm (8-4) continued their home turf dominance on Saturday night, extending their home win streak to 31 games with a 30-24 victory over last week's #1 team, the Cedar Rapids Titans. With the win, the Storm jump up 3 spots in the poll and take sole possession at the top of the United Conference standings. Sluggish throughout the game on offense, the Storm relied on the accurate kicking leg of Parker Douglass to put points on the boards. Douglass accounted for 12 points and was awarded Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance. The Storm now control their own destiny for earning home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Sioux Falls is idle this week with a bye.

For the first time in team history there will be a postseason season for the Nebraska Danger. The Danger (8-4) punched their ticket to the playoffs with a 69-42 victory over the Wyoming Cavalry. The potent Danger offense, which leads the league in points per game (52.6), features the dynamic duo of QB Jameel Sewell and WR Kayne Farquharson. Both players rank at or near the top in every major statistic for their position. The Danger get a chance to rest up with a bye this weekend before their biggest game of the season in Week 17, a road trip to take on the Colorado Ice.

After a heartbreaking 41-37 loss to the Tri-Cities Fever, the Colorado Ice (7-4) drop one spot to #3 in this week's poll. Leading 34-22 entering the 4th quarter, the Ice were unable to hold off the Fever down the stretch. The loss delivered a big blow to Colorado's bid for the #1 seed in the Intense Conference as well as home field in the postseason. The Ice will look to rebound this weekend when they travel to take on the Texas Revolution.

Falling from the top spot to #4 this week is the Cedar Rapids Titans (7-5). In a physical battle, the Titans fell just short of the Storm this weekend at the "Storm Shelter". Even bigger than the 30-24 defeat on the scoreboard, the Titans lost the IFL's leading rusher Laron Council for the season with a torn Achilles. This is now back-to-back weeks that the Titans have lost All-League talent to season ending injuries (starting QB Charles McCullum-ACL last week). The injury bug is hitting the Titans at the worst time of the season. The Titans continue their push for the postseason this weekend with a trip to Wyoming to take on the Cavalry.

Idle in Week 15, the Chicago Slaughter (7-5) round out the Top 5. The Slaughter finish the season with two games against bitter rivals the Green Bay Blizzard. The first of those matchups is this weekend in Chicago.

Spots 6-9 belong to the Texas Revolution, Tri-Cities Fever, Green Bay Blizzard, and Wyoming Cavalry. The Revs (5-6) kept their playoff hopes alive with a 60-56 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard. Texas hosts Colorado this weekend in a must win game. The Fever (5-7) move up one spot to #7 following the win over Colorado. The Fever are on a bye this week. The Blizzard (4-7) fall 2 spots to #8 after losing to Texas. Green Bay needs a lot of help down the stretch to qualify for the postseason. The Cavalry (1-10) will have "upset" on their mind this weekend when they take on the injury riddled Titans.

The Indoor Football League was created in 2008 from a merger between the Intense Football League and the United Indoor Football Association.
