Lincoln, NE - A lot of jokes are made about football kickers. They are sometimes ridiculed for the fact that they are not typically very physical guys for the most part, and by and large they are relegated to "unsung hero" status on your average American football team. The Oklahoma Defenders' kicker, Tommy Frevert, is the exception to that rule, especially when it came to the game between the Oklahoma Defenders (3-2) and the Lincoln Haymakers on Saturday night in Lincoln's Pershing Auditorium.
Frevert split the Lincoln uprights five times on five attempts, including remarkable 46-yard and 53-yard boots in the first quarter. Frevert's five perfect field goals was one of the catalysts that put the Defenders on the road to a 73-61 win over the Haymakers.
The game proved to be a pretty good street fight, all things considered, with the Defenders scoring 20+ points in three of the games four quarters. Lincoln proved up to the challenge most of the way through, scoring the same amount in two of the four quarters.
Quarterback Brady May had a decent day in his third start for the Defenders, completing 11 of 34 pass attempts for 134 yards and three touchdowns. Packy Jones caught six passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. May found Matt Rice twice for 27 yards and a score.
Kingjack Washington galloped 18 times for 82 yards and a score, while Jamario Thomas carried the ball twice for 16 yards and scored twice. The Haymakers came closest to taking the lead during the fourth quarter, after a 30-yard touchdown brought the Haymakers within 4 points. However, the Defenders answered with three touchdowns over the final 13 minutes of the game.
Defensively, Ronnell Lewis made nine tackles. Defensive back Niko Wright recorded 7 tackles and two pass breakups. The Defenders defense also managed to score a safety in the second quarter.
All-in-all, it was an excellent effort on the part of the visitors on Saturday in Lincoln. The win improves the Defenders to 3-2 on the season as they approach the season's midway point, snapping a two-game slide that began at home last month against Wichita.
The Defenders now move on to face the Bloomington Edge at 7:05 Saturday night, April 12th at home in the Cox Business Center.
