Defender Sean McFarlane Returns to South Florida for 2021 USL Championship Season
MIAMI - The Miami FC continues to bolster its 2021 USL Championship roster announcing on Wednesday the signing of defender Sean McFarlane, pending league and federation approval. The 27-year-old has signed a multi-year deal with Miami FC.
"Most importantly Sean knows the level of expectations at Miami FC and has proven he has the mentality to be able to flourish in our environment," said Technical Director and Head Coach Paul Dalglish. "Furthermore he is the ideal player profile for our system and has proven himself as one of, if not the best attacking right back in the USL with 14 assists and 5 goals in the last 2 years. I am really excited to be able to welcome Sean back to the team that is in his heart."
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, McFarlane is predominantly a right back but can be deployed as center back if needed. He spent both the 2019 and 2020 season with USL Championship's Austin Bold, where he featured in 51 official matches including league and U.S. Open Cup play. In 2020, McFarlane was able to tally up two goals and two assists in just 15 matches, making him one of the top players in his position.
During the 2019 season, McFarlane was able to score three goals in 33 league matches, but his standout year was highlighted by him recording 12 assists. The speedy right back also played in three open cup matches that year, adding another two assists to his total.
Prior to joining Austin, McFarlane had a terrific 2018 season with Miami FC, playing a crucial part in the National Premier Soccer League championship run. In 17 appearances, the Jamaican scored three goals. McFarlane joined Miami after a successful 2017 season which saw him score two goals and record two assists in 29 league matches with Colorado Switchbacks of the USL Championship.
McFarlane has earned 15 appearances with different age levels of the Jamaican youth national team, while also being a member of the senior national team that made a historic run to the Final of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Coming to the United States at the age of 11, McFarlane is no stranger to South Florida. He first studied at the American Heritage School in Fort Lauderdale and after a short stint at Saint Leo University, he transferred to Florida International University, home of Riccardo Silva Stadium.
Below is the roster as of today's addition of Sean McFarlane.
