Defender Madeleine Thompson Announces Retirement

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (September 25, 2014) - Sky Blue FC defender Madeleine Thompson announced her retirement from professional soccer today.

"Since finishing this past season, I've decided to pursue other opportunities," Thompson said. "Playing professional soccer has been an incredible experience and being able to play with such a talented, fun and caring group made it even more special. I would like to thank everyone at Sky Blue FC and all of the fans for their support and making these past two seasons so unforgettable."

During the 2014 season, Thompson, 23, made two appearances and earned a starting role on May 7 against the Chicago Red Stars.

The Corvallis, Oregon, native signed with Sky Blue FC in March 2013 as a discovery player. In her first year with the New Jersey club, Thompson made 14 appearances, starting four matches and playing 409 minutes.

"I want to thank Maddie for all she has contributed to Sky Blue FC over the past two seasons," Sky Blue FC technical director and head coach Jim Gabarra said. "She was a real pleasure to coach and always got the job done. I am confident she will do well in the next phase of her life and wish her all the best."

Prior to her NWSL career, Thompson was a member of the Stanford Women's Soccer team. She was a four-time PAC-12 Champion and won the NCAA Championship in 2011 alongside SBFC teammate Cami Levin. Thompson was also an NCAA Championship runner-up in 2009 and 2010, and was a tournament finalist in 2012.

" This fall, I'm looking forward to moving to the Bay Area where I'll be starting a new role in commercial real estate investment and development," Thompson said. "Playing professional soccer has been an incredible experience, and I'm excited to take what I've learned over the past two years and face new challenges."
