Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - The 23-player roster for the Canadian Men's National team was unveiled today as a set of 23 #CanadaRED jerseys were on tour at iconic locations in the City of Vancouver, host site for next week's 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers match at BC Place.
Included in the list of 23-player selection is Ottawa Fury FC midfielder Julian De Guzman who has been capped 83 times and can equal the all-time appearances mark for Canada set by Paul Stalteri (84) in Canada's first World Cup Qualifier next Friday, November 13 at BC Place when Canada hosts Honduras.
"I am thrilled to again have the chance to represent my country in a very tough competition," said De Guzman. "It is very special to have the first game at home. The result is very important and with some new faces on board this team is starting to gel together well."
De Guzman could set the record for most caps in Canada's second World Cup Qualifier on Tuesday, November 17 when they travel to El Salvador.
"It has been huge achievement to have so many caps - staying fit and healthy has been a big part of that. It is important to set the bar high so that the younger generations has the quality and opportunity to break a record like this."
In this CONCACAF semi-final stage, the 12 nations are divided into three groups, with each four-team group playing six matches during international windows over an 11-month period. Following these two matches in November, Canada will play two matches in March 2016 (at home and away against Mexico) and two matches in September 2016 (away against Honduras and at home against El Salvador).
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is the biggest single-sport event in the world. From 209 member associations from around the world, 32 finalists will qualify for the 32-day event that is played in 11 cities from 14 June to 15 July 2018.
